Low-income residents of Southwestern Ontario can now access clinic services over the phone in French. On May 2, 2011, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) launched a new clinic advice line through the Windsor-Essex Bilingual Legal Clinic.

By calling the toll-free number (1-855-650-9716), eligible clients can receive summary legal advice, general information and referrals in French. Areas of law include: social assistance, Ontario Disability Support Program, Ontario Works, Canada Pension Plan, employment rights, immigration, housing (tenants’ rights) and human rights.

The goal of the new service is to reach underserviced areas in the counties of Essex, Lambton, Kent, Middlesex, Elgin, Oxford, Brant, Huron, Perth, Bruce and Grey. The pilot project is funded by LAO and administered by the Windsor-Essex Bilingual Legal Clinic.

The new service follows three other advice lines launched last year in Northern Ontario, the GTA and Eastern Ontario."

This new service will be a welcome development and help to increase access to justice for French-speaking persons in southwestern Ontario. Those working with members of the Francophone community will want to add this to their resource list.
